A CULINARY ODYSSEY: MEMORIES

In the late ‘80s going to LandLubber’s changed all of that. Before then I can’t even remotely remember having seafood except Burger King king sized Whopper (with she’s a horse, of course).

Growing up in Greenville North Carolina I really had no concept of seafood, except for locally sourced fried fish usually on Friday nights, frozen fish, sticks open in the school, cafeteria. Other than that I can remember canned tuna and mackerel eaten with saltine crackers, or in casseroles.

LandLubber’s would change all of that for me. My friend and colleague, Ron Bartholomew and I often ventured away from lunches on Franklin Street and headed towards South Square for lunch and places like Bullocks, K and W, and interesting places at South Square Mall. LandLubber’s which was located on Highway 54 in a gray building across the street from Hardees. I don’t know if had been recommended to or it was favorite we went frequently.

Initially, it was the calabash style fried fish plates that we were drawn too but the late 80s was also the time when blackened fish dishes started appearing on menus and restaurants everywhere.
